You're right. Actually, it's not about the player's movement. Isometric characters usually have animations in 8 directions but since the game was made in a short amount of time(for GGJ 2021), we didn't have enough time to finish all of them, and eventually we decided to go with only 4 diagonal animations. So that's why the character looks like this :-)

player-character diagonals/straight movement directions are not at a clean 45° from one another, continuously steering it off the stages/puzzles.
